Amy Potenger

Born 1988, Tāmaki Makaurau

Lives and works in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand

Amy Potenger creates systems to process collected materials, generating outcomes that are both image and object. These adaptive systems are dynamic and open-ended, embrace mistakes and intuition, and react to inputs of new materials, objects, actions and images. Components intersect and cross fertilise, lines of thought meet, and the expected makes way for the unexpected.

In the past year, Potenger has been constructing paintings on layers of canvas and PVC that she stacks in different combinations. Translated from her digital workflow, this method of building from the front and back simultaneously utilises negative space, holes and transparency. Layers are repeatedly cut into, exposing the internal structure of the paintings and allowing the viewer’s eyes to weave in and out of the accumulated surfaces. In an age of digitalisation, we smoothly oscillate between digital and physical surfaces, taking in a wealth of information at once. Potenger is interested in how this way of interfacing with the world affects how the viewer perceives these multiple interior spaces and surfaces and, in turn, how makers create objects and images.
